EXHIBITION BRIEF

A project first initiated during a residency program and exhibition at the Yokohama Museum of Art, and followed up during his retrospective exhibition in Taiwan, artist Hou Chunming has embarked on the 3rd phase of his The Asian Father Interview Project in Bangkok.

In a departure from the 2 previous phases which were undertaken within museums, the artist in this 3rd phase situates the interviews in locations related to the interviewees’ occupations in the attempt to relate to their everyday lives.

Hou sought collaboration with individuals in one-to-one exchange sessions, contextualising his artistic output through chats and sketches based on the recollections of the relationships between the interviewees and their fathers.  Hou is looking to the past; questioning and highlighting the memory of the role of the father. Or how we choose to see, acknowledge or even dispute, what a father figure may represent. This is the thematic axis of Hou’s project and exhibition.

Interviewees guided by a set of questionnaires wrote or sketched their recollections of their father. Hou would then produce a composition, in a form of a drawing or painting, based on the narratives of the interviewees. Immediately after, Hou invited the interviewees to respond to the visual images of their fathers he had created. This three-week process culminates in an on-site presentation at Gallery Ver.

These exchanges were undertaken with the aim of self discovery through others. According to the artist, “What makes me very curious is whether your father is an important part of your life. Does your father's existence matter to you? Or it does not really matter? Or it is merely a hurtful experience? What is the influence from your father? All these questions come from my desire to be a good father. I truly wish to understand how others be fathers through such exchanges, so that I could better learn to be a father.”

In an expansive set-up which includes pieces from the earlier phases, Father Figures is a multi-faceted exhibition filled with drawings, sketches, paintings, photography, text and video documentation. Through these diverse forms, they are all connected to Hou’s interest in how the mechanics of personal history work in the process of remembrance and imagination.

ARTIST PROFILE

Born in Taiwan in 1963, Hou Chun-Ming graduated from the Fine Arts Department of the first graduating class of Taipei National University of the Arts. Known primarily for his woodblock prints and freeform drawings and paintings, Hou revels in his diaristic metamorphosis of images and texts into visual representations.

A provocateur, not necessarily an intended one, his mix of personal taboos, ethics and aesthetics, especially concerning sexual ethos, has remained a frequent exemplar of his art. Nonetheless, Hou’s artistic issues have maintained a philosophical dimension that equally interrogates identity politics.

The first Taiwanese artist to be invited for the National Pavilion in the Venice Biennale of 1995, Hou has also participated in various international exhibitions, including INSIDE OUT: NEW CHINESE ART, New York; Busan Biennale, Art Taiwan-Erotic Paradise, Museum Of Contemporary Art, Sydney and Reshaping History, National Convention Center, Beijing in 2010.

Hou is also an avid gardener who likes to grow and make paintings of plants.

เกี่ยวกับนิทรรศการ

โครงการนี้ได้ริเริ่มครั้งแรกที่พิพิธภัณฑ์ศิลปะโยโกฮาม่า ประเทศญี่ปุ่น  เมื่อครั้งที่ศิลปิน โหว ชุนหมิง ได้ไปพำนักเพื่อฝึกหัดความชำนาญที่นั่น อีกครั้งในนิทรรศการผลงานย้อนหลังที่ประเทศไต้หวัน และในครั้งที่ 3 นี้ ศิลปินก็ได้เดินทางมาทำ The Asian Father Interview Project ที่กรุงเทพฯ นี้

โครงการ 2 ครั้งที่ผ่านมา การดำเนินกิจกรรมนั้นเกิดขึ้นภายในพิพิธภัณฑ์ แต่ในครั้งที่ 3 นี้เองมีความต่างออกไป ศิลปินเดินทางไปสัมภาษน์ถึงในสถานที่ทำงานของผู้ให้สัมภาษน์ อันเป็นที่ซึ่ง พวกเหล่านั้นใช้ชีวิตอยู่ทุกๆ วัน

การค้นคว้าของโหวเป็นไปในลักษณะการแลกเปลี่ยนแบบตัวต่อตัว นั่นคือในขณะที่พูดคุยกับ ผู้ให้สัมภาษณ์เกี่ยวกับเรื่องราวความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างพวกเขากับพ่อ โหวก็ร่างภาพซึ่งจะแสดงให้เห็นถึงความสัมพันธ์ดังกล่าวไปด้วยในขณะเดียวกัน เขามองกลับไปยังอดีต ที่ซึ่งเคยเกิดคำถามและเป็นช่วงสำคัญในการเป็นพ่อ ทำอย่างไรถึงจะเข้าใจ เรียนรู้ หรือแม้แต่การคิดสงสัย  โครงร่างของพ่อนั้นเสนออะไรออกมา และนี้เองคือใจความสัำคัญที่ศิลปินต้องการจะนำเสนอ

ผู้ให้สัมภาษณ์ได้ตอบคำถามและวาดภาพที่แสดงออกถึงพ่อในควาทรงจำของพวกเขา แล้วโหวเองก็จะนำสิ่งเหล้านั้นมาสร้างสรรค์เป็นงานเขียนหรือภาพวาดอันมีพื้นฐานอยู่บนเรื่องราวที่ผู้ให้สัมภาษญ์บอก เมื่อภาพวาดเสร็จ ผู้ให้สัมภาษณ์ก็จะได้เขียนแสดงความคิดเห็นถึงภาพที่โหวได้วาดออกมา แล้วขั้นท้ายสุดของการดำเนินกิจกรรมเป็นเวลา 3 สัปดาร์ผ่านมาก็จะถูกจัดแสดงที่แกลเลอรี่เวอร์นี้

เกี่ยวกับศิลปิน

โหว ชุนหมิง

เกิดที่ประเทศไต้หวัน ในปี พ.ศ. 2506 จบการศึกษาจาก Taipei National University of the Arts ผลงานแรกเริ่มซึ่งเป็นที่รู้จักคือ ภาพพิม์ไม้ ภาพเขียนและภาพวาด ผลงานของเขาเกิดจากการแปลงข้อมูล รูปลักษณ์และข้อความให้เป็นรูปแบบ ภาพวาดของเขาเอง

ในงานของเขา กิเลส มักจะเป็นสิ่งหลีกเลี่ยงไม่ได้ เขามักจะผสมเอาข้อห้ามทางจริยธรรมและความงามทางเพศไว้ในผลงาน อย่างไรก็ตามเขาก็ยังคงรักษาไว้ซึ่งความเท่าเทียมกัันของมิติทางปรัชญาและการเมือง

โหวเป็นศิลปินไต้หวันคนแรกที่ถูกเชิญเข้าร่วมแสดง The National Pavilion ใน The Venice Biennale เมื่อปี พ.ศ. 2538 และเข้าร่วมในนิทรรศการแสดงกลุ่ม INSIDE OUT : NEW CHINESE ART, นิวยอร์ก ; Busan Biennale, Art Taiwan – Erotic Paradise, พิพิธภัณฑ์ศิลปะร่วมสมัย, ซิดนีย์ และ Reshaping History, National Convention Center, ปักกิ่ง ในปีนี้
